We're starting with the '60s in regards to who were your favorite bands too!!!

OK...before we begin, let me give you a little brief background about myself:
Was born in San Francisco, back in the '60s era.  Lived in the heart of the city till 1975.  Became a music fanatic and in awe of analog/tube stereos of that era (have a fully restored 1965 Fisher 500-C with 1967 Dynaco A-10 speakers), due to my dad going through one used stereo after another from the secondhand shop and stacks of playing his favorite records up till 3 to 4 in the morning on Saturday evenings. Had experienced my first (free) concert at Golden Gate Park as a very young child, in which I had seen Jefferson Airplane perform.  Started to soon go see other concerts at the park a few years later from 1974 and on. Still as a very young teenager attended many concerts there after...in the mid '70s at historic venues like Winterland, The Cow Palace, Oakland Coliseum, Oakland Stadium (Day On The Greens), The Fillmore, other venues up till 2006...before permanently leaving California in 2008.

This intro is to start with the first decade that I grew up and was exposed to my favorite enjoyment in life (even as a musician)....MUSIC! :-)

So here we go for starters:
Here's the top first three bands that took me by storm when I was a kid in the '60s the the best city to musically live in during that late '60s psychedelic era (my personal favorite): San Francisco!
Bands:
1. Pink Floyd (with Syd Barrett)
2. Jimi Hendrix
3. The Doors

Who was your three faves?
Cheers!

  2. Ben,

Nice choices on your top three!

Well if I could go back in time, would have actually taken The Beatles (how I forget that???) over The Doors, but I missed the bullet train...lol!

  4. My Sister (5 years older) had a room next to mine and we would try and drown each others music out! She would play Beatles and I would play Beach Boys (1964-1965) and i would tell her how much i "Hated" the Beatles and she would say that the Beach Boys couldn't whip wet noodles!
When the movie "Help" came out in 1965 I finally realized that they weren't all that bad...
In 1968 I heard Hendrix for the first time (age 10) and thought he was "Terrible"...(ha, ha)...
I didn't REALLY appreciate a LOUD Fuzzy Guitar until I heard Grand Funk Railroad do "Heartbreaker" in 1969! The Hendrix started sounding pretty cool! As did "Revolution"...

  5. Say Marino,

Thank you for dropping by! Those are great choices for your top three. It also shows in your own talented playing and music.

Santana lived a few blocks down from my family while growing up in the heart of S.F., back in the '60s/early 70s. We always dug his music and supported S.F. bands like Santana, Airplane, and especially Quick Silver Messenger Service. Of course bands like Hendrix, Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Cream, Traffic, were also highly rotated on the turntable back then. :-)

    Cheers my friend~

  6. Ben,

That was a very cool and funny story about you and your sister...lol!

Unlike your first exp. hearing Hendrix, heard him the first time on a AM pocket radio (Purple Haze) and thought to myself..."Wow! Is this musician from another planet?" It certainly blew my mind at the young age of 7, like Syd/Floyd. Was hooked in a major way, ever since. ;-)
